Personal Guitar Design Consulting
by Giuliano Nicoletti

Alongside instrument making and research, I occasionally engage in consulting activities related to acoustic guitar design, evaluation, and system-level behaviour.

These engagements are not conceived as standard services or predefined packages. They are developed case by case, in response to specific questions or technical challenges where experience, measurement, and design insight can meaningfully contribute.

Consulting typically concerns situations where the acoustic behaviour of an instrument, a design choice, or a production process requires clarification, verification, or refinement.

Scope of Consulting

Consulting activities may involve, for example:

  • analysis of acoustic behaviour in finished instruments

  • evaluation and optimisation of design choices

  • interpretation of measurement data and frequency responses

  • tonewood characterisation and selection strategies

  • support in developing or refining acoustic design frameworks

  • assistance with measurement systems and evaluation protocols

The work is problem-driven rather than prescriptive, and always contextual to the instrument, workshop, or organisation involved.

Who This Is For

Consulting engagements are typically developed with:

  • Luthiers and guitar builders, seeking to address specific acoustic questions or design challenges

  • Companies and manufacturers, working on new instruments, materials, or evaluation processes

  • Advanced musicians or collectors, interested in understanding the behaviour of a particular instrument

  • Researchers, institutions, or associations, collaborating on topics related to musical acoustics

  • Tonewood suppliers, requiring characterisation and evaluation of materials

Format of Engagements

Depending on the nature of the request, consulting may take place:

  • remotely, through focused online sessions

  • in person, for hands-on analysis, measurement, or training

  • over a limited number of sessions or as part of a short, defined collaboration

There is no fixed format or duration. Each engagement is shaped around the specific objectives and context.

Background and Experience

My consulting work draws on years of research and practical experience in acoustic guitar design, as well as on teaching activities carried out through workshops, seminars, webinars, and collaborations with lutherie schools, associations, and professional ateliers.

These activities are not presented here as products, but as context for the type of questions and discussions that consulting engagements may involve.

Enquiries

Consulting is offered on a limited basis and evaluated individually.

If you wish to discuss a specific question, project, or situation, you may get in touch via the contact page to outline your context and objectives.

Measuring and tuning the performances of the acoustic guitar

A webinar for the European Guitar Builder association that explores the new techniques of measurement and evaluation of the acoustic instrument. Technical parameters that are related to the acoustic performance, sound and timbre of the instrument, which allow the contemporary luthier to benefit from a technical approach in support of traditional instrument making.

Acoustic guitar Tonewood parameters measurement and selection

A webinar for the European Guitar Builders and French Guitar Luthiers associations, from Giuliano Nicoletti of Iulius Guitars. From the rectangular raw sample to the finished instrument, an overview of the available techniques and suggested practices to guide the guitar maker to consistently build the best instruments. Through the different steps of the build, with increasing levels of complexity.
