Intentional Design

Why I build this way

Luthiery has always been guided by tradition and intuition—and there’s a timeless beauty in that. Instruments carry the spirit of generations, shaped by hands that trust their ears and hearts. At Iulius Guitars, I honor this legacy while also embracing a complementary path: Intentional Design.

I build this way because I believe that musical instruments deserve both magic and method. My background in engineering and acoustics has taught me that sound is not only felt—it can be understood. Beneath the mystery lies physics, resonance, and structure. And when we understand those principles, we can guide them—not to replace the magic, but to support it.

From Intuition to Technique

Traditional methods have given us extraordinary instruments. But some aspects of tone and response are still left to chance. At Iulius Guitars, I aim to support intuition with knowledge—applying acoustic science to every decision, from bracing geometry to neck design to sound port placement.

This isn’t about challenging tradition. It’s about refining it, and offering builders and players more tools to shape their sound with confidence.

Innovation with Purpose

Every feature in my guitars exists for a reason:

  • Cantilevered Neck
Improves string resonance and upper fret access by removing the heel block.

  • Drop Port
Enhances low-end response and structural design without muddying the tone.

  • ETS (External Tuning Slot)
Allows post-build tuning of the instrument’s resonance, eliminating wolf notes and optimizing sustain.

  • T-Fan Bracing
A lightweight, responsive system that balances strength and tonal richness.

These innovations are not gimmicks—they’re thoughtful solutions to real acoustic and structural challenges.

A Language for Modern Luthiery

I published a book to share this philosophy, and I continue to offer seminars and webinars to explore how design and intuition can work together. My goal is to help musicians and builders understand that tone is not a mystery—it’s a craft, and one we can shape with both heart and mind.

 Why It Takes Time

This approach isn’t fast. It’s not mass-produced. It’s deliberate, collaborative, and deeply personal. I work with each client to shape an instrument that reflects their musical identity and acoustic needs.

I build this way because I believe the future of luthiery lies in knowledge guided by tradition, and in keeping the magic alive.

Just with a clearer map.
